"How do I become a Lifeguard?" or "What do I have to do to become a Certified Lifeguard?", and "How much is the Lifeguard training?" No worries! We have the answers for you below.

The Lifeguard Certification training is imperative to the process of getting hired as a Lifeguard. Through the Lifeguarding class, you will learn surveillance skills, teamwork, rescue, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a Professional Lifeguard. The purpose of the lifeguarding course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. The certification, which includes Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED training, is valid for two years upon completion and is accepted nationwide.

Prerequisites for our lifeguard training include:

  • Candidates must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.

  • Candidates must complete the online training portion prior to their arrival to the Lifeguard Certification Course.

  • Candidates must complete the following pre-course prior to taking the Lifeguard Certification Course:

- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

PLEASE READ

We want to make this clear and easy to understand. Please read the following information about lifeguard training, payment, rescheduling, and refunds.

Course and Certification

  • The course provides a two-year CPR, AED, and lifeguard certification for either shallow- or deep-water lifeguards.

  • This certification is valid for use at any Red Cross-sponsored lifeguarding facility.

Cost and Financial Assistance

  • Total class cost: $210.00.

  • If you need financial help, we offer payment assistance. To secure your spot, an initial non-refundable deposit of $50.00 is required.

  • With the deposit, the remaining balance will be deducted from your paycheck in $40.00 increments until the full cost is covered. This usually takes four pay periods.

  • The total amount deducted via payroll will be $160.00 in addition to your $50.00 deposit.

Loans and Payroll Deductions

  • If you are an employee of Happy Summers Management, LLC, any loans or assistance we provide (including lifeguard class costs, transportation such as Uber, or other loans) will be repaid through payroll deductions.

Deposit, Rescheduling, and Refunds

  • The class deposit ($50.00) is non-refundable.

  • If you paid only the deposit, you may reschedule your class within two weeks at no additional cost.

  • If you have paid the full class amount, you may reschedule within one month at no additional cost.

  • If you do not successfully complete the course, the payment is non-refundable. However:

    • If you paid only the deposit, we will allow a two-week period for scheduling and ONE rescheduled class at no extra charge.

    • If you paid in full, you may retake the course within one month; up to TWO additional attempts are allowed.

Non-employees and Out-of-Company Participants

  • If you want certification but do not plan to work for Happy Summers, the class fee is $325.00.

  • Payment assistance is only provided to those who plan on working with the company.

Payment Obligation After Certification

  • If you complete the training and become certified but do not begin or continue employment (until at least 75% of the training is covered) with Happy Summers—we will charge any remaining unpaid balance for the training to your payment method. Failure to work with Happy Summers will result in assessment of the out-of-company fee of $325. This ensures the cost of the training we provided is covered. If your payment method is declined or payment is not received within 30 days, we will pursue collection of the outstanding balance, which may include referral to a collections agency and/or legal action. You will be responsible for all costs and fees incurred in the collection process, including but not limited to collection agency fees, court costs, and reasonable attorney’s fees.

Please ensure all of this information is understood. When signing the agreement on the lifeguard application, you are agreeing to these terms.

If you have questions, need payment assistance, or want to reschedule, please contact us and we will help you through the process.
